Ascoli Piceno

Founded by the ancient Picenian people 1600 years before the foundation of Rome, Ascoli, also known as the “City of a hundred towers”, boasts a marvellous historic centre almost entirely built in travertine. Piazza del Popolo, the beating heart of the city centre, is a Renaissance-style square overlooked by the Palazzo dei Capitani, one of the main historical buildings with its medieval crenellated tower occupying the central part of the western side. The Cathedral, Piazza Arringo, the Roman amphitheatre, the gates and bridges that were part of the ancient city walls are worth a visit. Ascoli is also known for the historic Palio della Quintana and the famous Ascoli Olives.
