Civitella del Tronto
The Fortress of Civitella, located 600 metres above sea level in a strategic position on the former northern border of the Viceroyalty of Naples with the Papal State, is one of the most important works of military engineering in Europe, characterised by an elliptical shape with an extension of 25,000 square metres and a length of over 500 metres. It is famous for its valiant resistance to the siege by the French in 1806 and the Piedmontese in 1861. Today, the structure can be partially visited pending the completion of restoration work. Civitella is also home to one of the narrowest alleys in Italy. The narrow street is called ‘la Ruetta’, measures just 44 centimetres at the entrance.
