Martinsicuro’s coastal biotope extends along a large area of free beach, representing one of the few places where the dune area can evolve naturally. In addition to constituting an effective protection against coastal erosion, the area represents an important example of reconstructed habitat in the region.
The biotope is home to rare flora and fauna species threatened with extinction, including as many as 40 indigenous and spontaneous botanical species of considerable natural interest. The presence of naturally developed dunes protects psammophilous plants, species that love sand and are able to survive in an arid, salt-rich environment.
Martinsicuro’s biotope is an ideal place to admire various animal species, including the Fratino, a small, endangered wading bird that habitually nests on the beaches. Since 1987, the European of the Environment, this stretch of beach has been classified as a biotope by the Italian Botanical Society.
